Rock Point School held its 16th annual art show,The Road Less Traveled this month at the Rose Street Gallery, with an opening night filled with guests, student artists, members of the Rock Point School community, food, musical entertainment, and a “kids’ corner” where children could make art.

With the help of art instructor Jeannie Waltz, the senior class put on the entire show––from advertising, collecting artist statements from fellow students, hanging the show, preparing the food, arranging entertainment for the opening, recording sales, and, ultimately, taking down the show. Students prepared the entire 2015-2016 school year for this event, creating works of art out of media such as watercolor, acrylic, pen and ink, stained glass, photography, and more.

Organizing the show began in earnest in late March, with creating a postcard announcing the show and sending out a press release. The seniors juggled these tasks in addition to their normal school responsibilities.  The senior class learned many life lessons, such as dealing with high stress, working under deadlines, and cooperating with peers.

Kaity, a senior, said, “It was a satisfying experience to have created a successful event from scratch, and to sell some of my own art.  I never would have imagined how much organization and attention to detail one single event would require.”

Her classmate, Micah, who coordinated the sales on the night of the event, echoed this in saying, “I learned how an event, even one as small scale as this one, requires a ton of small components to be put into place in order for the event to be a success.”

The students reflected that it was “interesting” to work “with a group of people who all have different styles of organizing things.” Jeannie Waltz summed up the seniors’ work like this: “They went above and beyond to produce this event. From the tireless efforts involved with transporting art and climbing ladders to organizing and communicating art sales, they worked together. They kept each other motivated and were genuinely impressed with their peers.”
