Peter Small was a prolific sculptor and produced hundreds of pieces throughout his life. He began working with clay in the 1980s, and the human head was his most constant subject. He enjoyed experimenting and perfecting new techniques, such as the "ribbon" technique (in some of the sculptures above), which involved creating delicate patterns with "ribbons" of clay to form a more significant structure. Peter passed away in 2013, and about 20 of his sculptures found a new home at RPS. We are very grateful to have these art pieces on our land and are excited to share them with others. We hope you will join us for an Art Walk to learn more about Peter and his work.
When: Saturday, October 10, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Where: Rock Point School, Burlington, VT
We have placed three sculptures in front of the school and another seventeen sculptures are placed along a wooded trail next to the school. The sculpture walk is short, about 40 yards through the woods. This is a self-guided walk and there will be signage and information about the sculptures and Peter. You'll also get to see two Fairy Houses built by RPS students this fall!
Please park on Institute Rd. (in front of the Burlington High School playing fields) and walk to the trailhead, which is located to the left as you walk in through the entrance to Rock Point. If you are able to walk along a wooded trail with mulch footing, but are not able to walk the distance to the trailhead, feel free to drive to the school and we will help you get access to the trail.
All events at Rock Point School require guests to wear face masks and practice social distancing.
