Statement on Recent Protests Against Police Violence

on June 3, 2020 By Molly Huddle Coffey | News Feed
The Rock Point School staff is sad, angry, scared, and frustrated over the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. Our hearts are with the families and communities of these victims as they grieve for their loved ones. We believe Black Lives Matter. We know that these killings are only the most recent visible examples of a history of racism in our country, and the racism that continues to permeate our culture is unacceptable. We are committed to working against racism and creating positive change in our school, in our community, and in our country. We encourage everyone to use their right to vote, protest safely, and raise their voices to demand justice, freedom, and peace.

Breakfast for Dinner: Together Apart

on May 22, 2020 By Molly Huddle Coffey | community
This year, we were challenged to create virtual versions of our traditional end-of-the-year events. Each one plays an important role in closing the school year and helping students transition to their next step, whether that is a summer off or preparation for college. Our staff has worked hard to capture the spirit of these events online, but one of the biggest challenges is making sure all the technical pieces work!

Prom At Home 2020

Prom is one of our favorite non-traditional traditional events at Rock Point School. While most high schools have a prom, ours is an original event that, in typical RPS fashion, does not take itself too seriously. Staff members and students wear everything from traditional black tie to goofy costumes. Students are treated to a ride in a thematic vehicle dubbed the "lame-o" and served milkshakes and smoothies by staff at the Hydration Station. There's often an ice cream truck, an appreciation of seniors, a fancy dinner, and there is always a lot of dancing. This year, we were challenged to bring together these elements of silliness, celebration, community, and tradition while we are all staying home!

Vermont Young Playwrights' Festival 2020

Each year Rock Point School participates in the Vermont Young Playwrights' Project, in conjunction with the Vermont Young Writers and Vermont Stage Company. As part of this project, a professional playwright visits the school in the fall for a series of workshops on playwriting. Students produce original 10-minute plays during these workshops and working with our English Teacher, Abbey Baker.

A New Platform to Connect

on April 29, 2020 By Molly Huddle Coffey | COVID-19 community
As Rock Point School staff and students have spread out across the country, we have had to get creative with ways to connect with students and find ways for them to connect outside of the classroom. We have recently turned to a program called Discord. Many communities use Discord as a platform to connect, share media, organize events, video/voice chat, and a lot more.

Join Your Friends for Alumni Video Chats April 21 or 22!

on April 15, 2020 By Molly Huddle Coffey | community
We are offering a digital space for Rock Point School alumni to connect during this time of physical distancing (we can still be social!). It will be a great opportunity to catch up with old friends, share stories about RPS, and support each other.

Physically Distant, Still Deeply Connected

Like most schools, Rock Point School has temporarily suspended our on-campus activities due to COVID-19. As we made arrangements with families to get students home safely, we also started to make plans with our staff about how we could best support our students and their families at this uncertain time. While we know it is necessary to be physically distant at this time, we also know it is crucially important to stay deeply connected to our community.

Living History

While students are engaged in distance learning, as part of our history classes, they are being asked to keep journals in order to create primary sources for future generations. These journals include documenting their own experiences (through writing, art, and music), documenting the experiences of the people they live with, and documenting (through remote Question & Answer) the weekly experiences of two people with whom they do not live. Students also will record a "news item of the day" and a photo of the day. We hope this assignment will help students reflect on their own experiences during the pandemic and see how their own experiences fit in with the larger trends in society at this time.
